The “Queen of Sichuan’s Mountains” Covered in Ice and Snow

Geographical Location:
The Siguniang Mountain Scenic Area is located in Siguniangshan Town, Xiaojin County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It belongs to the Qionglai Mountains of the Qinghai – Tibet Plateau, about 200 km away from Chengdu. It is composed of three scenic spots: Changping Valley, Haizi Valley, and Shuangqiao Valley. It is on the China Panda Avenue and also on the Western Sichuan Small Ring Road. The four peaks are Dafeng (5025 meters), Erfeng (5276 meters), Sanfeng (5355 meters), and Yaomei Peak (6250 meters). The four snow – capped mountains are arranged in order of height, standing between Haizi Valley and Changping Valley.

Climate Conditions:
Siguniang Mountain is a seasonal snow – capped mountain. There is not snow on the mountain all year round. The weather on the plateau is changeable, and it may snow in all four seasons. Generally, there is snow on the shady slopes, while the sunny slopes are covered with broken stones. From March to May in Siguniang Mountain is the spring snow season. During this period, there is basically snow on the mountain. When it snows, the snow can reach knee – high overnight. From October to December, there is an autumn snow season. From January to February of the following year is the dry season. When climbing the snow – capped mountain during the dry season, the air pressure is stable, and the summit success rate is relatively high. From June to August is the flower – blooming and rainy season. If you are lucky, the mountains will be full of flower seas, and Siguniang Mountain will fully reveal its true appearance. If you are unlucky, it will be rainy all the way, and you can’t see anything.

Weather Conditions:
There is a large temperature difference between day and night in Siguniang Mountain. In summer, the daytime temperature is around 25 – 30 °C. When the sun is out, it’s very sunny, so be sure to bring sunscreen. At night, the temperature is only 3 – 5 °C. Generally, places where the sun doesn’t shine are relatively cold. The coldest time is winter, with the night – time temperature below 0 °C. The temperature for night – time summit attempts throughout the year is below 0 °C. The coldest perceived temperature is around – 18 °C.
