Explore the Wonders of the Ancient Water Conservancy Project — Dujiangyan

Dujiangyan is a city boasting rich historical culture and natural landscapes. The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is its most renowned attraction. It is, to date, the oldest, the only remaining, and still operational large – scale water conservancy project characterized by dam – less water diversion. The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, this ancient and intelligent water conservancy feat, is like a dazzling pearl inlaid on the land of Sichuan. Spanning thousands of years, it still quietly guards this land and nurtures generations of people. Strolling through the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, the bluestone paths beneath your feet seem to be telling stories of the past. The surging river water roars through the Bottle – neck Channel, and its imposing momentum makes people marvel at the wisdom and courage of the ancients. The Fish – mouth Diversion Dike skillfully divides the river water into two parts, and the ingenious design of diverting 40% of the water to the inner river and 60% to the outer river achieves a perfect balance between irrigation and flood control. This water conservancy project consists of parts such as the Fish – mouth, the Feisha Weir, and the Bottle – neck Channel: • Fish – mouth: Named because the head of the dike resembles a fish’s mouth, it divides the Minjiang River into the Inner River and the Outer River. Its ingenious design utilizes the terrain to complete the diversion of the Minjiang River and plays a role in self – regulating water volume. The Inner River is on the concave bank, and the Outer River is on the convex bank. According to the flow law of the bend, most of the sand and stones will be carried away by the Outer River, achieving the “20 – 80 sand – division” effect. • Feisha Weir: It is a low weir on the outer side of the Inner River. Together with the blocking effect of Lidui, it can play a second – round sand – discharging role before the water flows into the Bottle – neck Channel. At the same time, when the water volume is large, it cooperates with the spillway to automatically release floodwaters, discharging the excess water from the Inner River into the main stream of the Outer River, thus protecting the Inner River from floods. • Bottle – neck Channel: Shaped like a bottle mouth, it was formed by Li Bing’s method of heating the mountain with fire and then pouring water to chisel the mountain artificially. It restricts the amount of water entering the Chengdu Plain. During the flood season, it can hold back a large amount of water. When the water level exceeds the adjacent Feisha Weir, the water will be drained into the Outer River, achieving the effect of secondary flood – discharge. The construction of the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project has transformed the Sichuan Plain, which was once prone to droughts and floods, into the “Land of Abundance”. It can not only meet the irrigation needs but also prevent floods, embodying the harmonious co – existence between man and nature. In conclusion, Dujiangyan is a wonderful place with beautiful natural scenery, profound historical culture, and numerous special delicacies, worthy of in – depth exploration and experience.
