Mount Emei is located in the southwest of Sichuan Province, on the southwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin. It is one of the “Four Great Buddhist Mountains” in China. With its steep terrain and beautiful scenery, it has long been known as “the most beautiful Mount Emei under heaven”. Wanfo Summit on the mountain is the highest point, with an altitude of 3,099 meters, more than 2,700 meters higher than the Emei Plain.
The “Emei County Annals” states: “The clouds gather like condensed emeralds, and the distant scenery looks like a beauty’s hair and eyebrows, fine and long, beautiful and charming. That’s why it’s named Mount Emei.”
Mount Emei is the bodhimanda of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Religious culture, especially Buddhist culture, constitutes the main body of the historical and cultural heritage of Mount Emei. All the buildings, statues, ritual implements, as well as ceremonies, music, paintings, etc. all exhibit a strong flavor of religious culture. There are many historical sites and temples on the mountain, such as Baoguo Temple, Fuhu Temple, Xixiangchi (the Pool for Washing Elephants), Longmen Cave, Sheshenya (the Cliff of Self – sacrifice), and the Emei Buddha’s Light. It is one of the destinations for tourism, recuperation, and summer retreat in China.
